The Peloponnesian Wars

The Peloponnesian Wars began in 431 BCE as a result of Sparta’s concern over the quick rise of Athens to power. The Peloponnesian League, therefore, attacked Attica. To strengthen their side, the Spartans promised Darius II that if they won they would return Persia’s lost cities on the Asiatic side (412 BCE). In return, the Persians promised to support the Spartans financially.

Cyrus the Younger, who served as a satrap in western Asia Minor, played a major role in Sparta’s victory over Athens. He provided the Spartans with much needed funds (404 BCE).
